North American built a total of 15,875 P-51's between 1940 and 1944. The P-51 was designated as the Mustang and constituted most of its wartime missions as a bomber escort in raids over Germany, helping ensure Allied air superiority from early 1944. The P-51 was most notably flown by the 332nd Fighter Group, "Tuskegee Airmen", also 8th and 9th Air Forces, in Europe. The Mustang also saw service against the Japanese in the Pacific War.
