Boieng built a total of 12,731 B-17's between 1936 and 1945. Designated as the Flying Fortress the B-17 was primarily employed in the daylight precision strategic bombing campaigns of World War II against German industrial and civilian targets dropping 640,036 tons of bombs on European targets in daylight raids. The B-17 established itself as a superb weapons system, dropping more bombs than any other US aircraft in World War II.
Crewed by 4 officers and 6 enlisted men, bristling with as many as thirteen .50 cal machine guns,
carrying up to 16,700 lb of bombs and renowned for its ruggedness and ability to keep flying with heavy damage,
the name ‘Flying Fortress’ was hard won and richly deserved.
